The Proust Questionnaire with Ed Becker

The Proust Questionnaire has its origins in a parlor game popularized (though not devised) by Marcel Proust, the French essayist and novelist, who believed that, in answering these questions, an individual reveals his or her true nature.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?  A house full of laughter.  

What is your greatest fear? Irrelevance.  

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself? I’m can’t spell.

What is the trait you most deplore in others? Tardiness.  

Which living person do you most admire?  Bruce.

What is your greatest extravagance? A twelve hour smoked butt.  

What is your current state of mind? Bliss, except for that awful pain in my knee.  

What do you consider the most overrated virtue? Purity.  

On what occasion do you lie? Very rarely.  

What do you most dislike about your appearance? I wish my pants fit better.  

Which living person do you most despise?  That guy in DC seems odd.  

What is the quality you most like in a man? A sense of humor.  

What is the quality you most like in a woman? A quick wit and long legs.  

Which words or phrases do you most overuse? What’s your story?  

What or who is the greatest love of your life? Wifey, kidos, and Lucy.  

When and where were you happiest? When the sun is out and the weeds in the garden are gone.  

Which talent would you most like to have? The ability to play the drums in a rock and roll band.  

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?  My penmanship is terrible. 

What do you consider your greatest achievement? Making it this far.  

If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing, what would it be? Lenny Bruce seemed like a fun guy.

Where would you most like to live? Malaga, ESP  

What is your most treasured possession? My words, and deeds. Also my Father’s original IBM wall clock.  

What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery? Listening to the endless drone of suburban power tools. And death.  

What is your favorite occupation? Writer. Or Musician.  Or Photographer.

What is your most marked characteristic? I can construct a sentence.  

What do you most value in your friends? A tendency to stick with it.

Who are your favorite writers? Hemingway, Richard Ford, Bukowski.  

Who is your hero of fiction?  Calvin. or Hobbes. Both really.

Which historical figure do you most identify with? Poe.  

Who are your heroes in real life?  Most Parents.  

What are your favorite names?  Matilda and Gertrude.  

What is it that you most dislike? The constant rain.   

What is your greatest regret?  Losing my LPs. Damnit Janet. 

How would you like to die? Peacefully, in a room with nice curtains.  

What is your motto?  There’s no crying in baseball.
